On Saturday during June at Launceston LINC Local artist Mehrangiz Modaress Tabatabaei will work with women from the Women’s Friendship Group, Glen Dhu Primary School Conversation Group, TasTAFE and the Migrant Resourcer on the Prayer Mats for Peace.

The mat will be at the ground floor of Launceston LINC Saturday June where members of the general public are invited to join the women for conversations and creation of the mats.

Event/Project Discription: We believe it is important to remind our community that Islam is a peaceful religion. We hope to do this by encouraging Muslim and non-Muslim women from our local community to work together to create one or two beautiful mats which celebrate peace through the context of Islam. Local artist Mehrangiz Modaress Tabatabaei will work with women from the Women’s Friendship Group, Glen Dhu Primary School Conversation Group, TasTAFE and the Migrant Resource Centre to plan and begin working on the project. The mat will then be taken to the ground floor of LINC Launceston where members of the general public will be invited to join these women for conversations and creation of the mats. Once finished, the mats will be displayed on the first floor in LINC. The project will be documented and also shown in LINC.

Mehrangiz Modaress Tabatabaei will be working at LINC on Friday the 29th July and Saturday 30th July so that the general public may also join the conversations creating the mats.

Other Information:

We would like families from our refugee communities to see LINC as somewhere they can spend time with their families, sharing books with their children or accessing other services. Although some of them may access LINC for classes, meetings, etc. We would like them to enjoy the space with their children to encourage a love of books and reading for them all.

A part of this Peace Festival is about the migrants living in Tasmania. For a migrant to start making a new sense of belonging to a new place, they need to be connected with the social activities. To make an ideal cohesive and sustained multicultural society and create the harmony among the diverse nations in one Island. The mat making offered in the Peace Festival is a social activity that provides the opportunity for change. The change, which bring a passion, to a better understanding of each other, gain more knowledge about other’s interest and to keep the balance among different cultures. It enhances our understanding to respect the equality, freedom of association, democracy and the rule of law. This prayer mat is combination of Eastern and Western design where the pattern is being implemented by a technique, “proggy” that comes from Northumberland in the United Kingdom. It is more than obvious that Art can be one of the catalysts to get the multi nations together and make a link.
